"The new 94th Song" - The new song for the 94th Battalion arrived in the city
yesterday and was sung around the local recruiting office last night. The words
are printed below and it is sung to the tune of "Tramp, tramp, tramp the boys
are marching". The song originated in Kenora and was brought to the city by
Quartermaster Sergeant Chappel of "B" company. The song will be sung at the
Orpheum Theatre on Saturday afternoon and evening. The words are as follows:
"They gathered from the college
And the office and the store:
They left the pen and ledger
And the bench;
For they know the country's need
And that every man should heed,
So they're giving up their birthright
For the trench
CHORUS
Tramp, tramp, tramp the boys are marching,
The new battalion from the north.
Sure the Germans never knew,
What Fort William lads could do,
But they'll find out when they meet the 94th
When we're called upon as parents,
To do our little bit:
When the country asks for men
We'll answer "aye"
Here's the lad we've loved for years,
For the King and Flag "three cheers"
God Bless the 94th every day.
CHORUS
Tramp, tramp, tramp the boys are marching,
The new battalion from the north.
Sure the Germans never knew,
What Fort William lads could do,
But they'll find out when they meet the 94th"
The recruiting team returned from Sioux Lookout, where they were warmly
welcomed with 20 new recruits. The citizens of the town put on 2 dances and a
banquet in their honour. While they were there the boys met with a gentleman
who, on the spur of the moment, penned the following verse:
Now here's Lieutenant Neeland,
Come up the line to scout,
And pick up some fine, sturdy lads
Who live at Sioux Lookout
Then why not don the khaki boys
And swell the glorious throng,
That's daily marching overseas,
To help to right the wrong
The Mother Country calls you boy's
Then haste to her relief,
And lend a hand to make a stand,
Against fair freedoms thief.
I've a brother in the trenches boys
My son has joined the fray,
And were it not for my gray hairs I'd be with them today.
Shall the Kaiser be master?
The Briton his slave?
Then let us move faster
To lands o'er the wave.
The hour is grave with danger fraught,
The Devils broke his chain,
And mapped in red are Europe's lands,
The sky, the earth, the main.
The hurrah! For the boys from the C.G.R.,
The boys from the office and plow,
May they never retreat, till the Kaiser is beat,
And the time to enlist is now.
On May 23rd, 1916, the men of the 94th Battalion held a "Farewell Concert" in
the Lyceum Theatre in Port Arthur and on the May 25th, 1916, the concert was
